The Excellent Northwest Motorcycle Adventure - Sept 1, 2012

The day started at 7am under a Blue Moon in Austin.

STella was flawless all the way.

The weather was perfect and the vistas were endless.

It turns out that when you ride 650 miles, park your bike and walk from the motel a mile into downtown, you look a great deal like you may be homeless and hungry. A very nice fellow who crossed my path on the sidewalk on the way took some pains to let me know that a free dinner was being served at Samaritan House, just down the street. As I passed by I noticed that the clientele looked gregarious and satisfied with the service, but I elected not to try their fare and proceeded to Dick's as planned. I sought out Dick's on the advice of Brian Piercy. Having seen Dick's, it now occurs to me I did not ask how he came to know the place. It is a singular establishment...a combination liquor store, bar, and restaurant that serves excellent Blue Tacos and $5 call whiskey...good stuff. A good time was had by all. Now off to bed at the most price aggressive motel in Las Vegas, NM...

PS - As I approached Las Vegas on US-84 I was surprised to find myself retracing part of the route my grandfather took on his trip to California. Signs posted along the highway reported that stretch of road had been Route 66 before 1937. I don't know exactly when he took the trip, but he went in a Model-T. My dad was born in 1928 so the trip probably pre-dated that. The vistas were beautiful, particularly so since it was late in the day. It put me on mind of Granddad, and it occurred to me these very sights may well have played a big role in his decision to roam the Rockies in a trailer for his retirement. I miss Granddad. He was a nice guy.
